The Global Observatory
The Global Observatory provides high resolution satellite images and maps of the earth, which can be downloaded and used by our media clients to broadcast to members of the public. The focus is on natural phenomena, weather and environmental change, including air quality, climate change and deforestation.
The Global Observatory also provides a calculation of the UK's Climate Change Index, provided by AEA. This predicts daily emissions of greenhouse gases from near real time energy demand and the emissions from the latest available Greenhouse Gas Inventory. The Climate Change Index estimates daily emissions of greenhouse gases from different power sources electricity, gas, solid fuel and liquid fuel, and converts these into a number which represents the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide. The daily emissions for gas and electricity are based the daily forecasted gas demand and calculated using the historic relationship between the gas, electricity and the annual inventory. Daily emissions for transport are based on traffic patterns from the Department of Transport statistics.
